Shut down harassment
Unfortunately, racism, misogyny and other forms of discrimination are alive and well in many parts of the world. At one point, you might witness someone being harassed or bullied due to their sex, sexual orientation, skin colour, or religion.
Here is what you can do to help someone being harassed, step by step.
1) Engage conversation. Go to them, sit down next to them and say hello. Try to appear calm and friendly. Ignore the aggressor.
2) Pick a random topic and start discussing it. The weather, something the victim is wearing, etc.
3) Keep building the safe space. Keep eye contact with them and keep ignoring the aggressor. The absence of response from you both will soon make things awkward enough for the aggressor that they will leave.
4) Continue the conversation until the aggressor leaves and escort them to a safe place, if necessary. Respect their wishes if they tell you they’re ok and would like to leave by themselves.
