Grow some food

It is so fun to grow food and it’s something that helps the planet and helps the bees. Our monocultural agriculture system hurts insects because farmers only grow one crop (like almonds, for instance) per field after field. When there is so much on only one crop, bees and other pollinators don’t have enough sources of food since all of the almonds bloom at once for two weeks and then don’t bloom again for the rest of the growing season. Large scale farms also generally use pesticides, which not only poisons the bees and other insects and animals, but it also pollutes our soils and waterways. So, now that we know why it’s important to grow your own food and rely less on the global agricultural system, back to the fun part!

There are all sorts of ways you can grow food and you can do it all year round. You can grow food from scraps in your kitchen, or you can grow food from seeds that you collect from things you eat, or you can start an outdoor garden on your balcony or in your backyard. You and your family could also join a community garden. If you’ve never grown food before, just start small and try one or two things at a time. Each year try growing something different and experiment with what works for your family’s life. Some things will work and some won’t but you and your family will learn a little bit more each year.
