Eat less sugar
Sugars that are added to foods, as opposed to sugars that occur naturally in fruit, vegetables, grains and dairy products, are associated with an increased risk of diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease, as well as cavities. But the worst part of sugary processed foods are that these products are often deplete of vitamins and minerals and displace more nutritious foods, such as fruits and vegetables, which help protect against a host of diseases.
While it’s important to make an active effort to reduce sugar in your diet (and it really does require effort since added sugar is in everything from pasta sauce to bread) we have to place equal importance on eating a diet rich in fruit and vegetables and whole grains.
