Make your own lip balm

Conventional lip balms are often full of manmade chemicals that are harmful to human health and to the environment. Fragrances, which are usually loaded with phthalates, and petrolatum—a petrochemical that contains cancer-causing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, to name a couple.

It’s very simple to make your own using natural ingredients and the end result works very well to soothe dry lips.

Here are the ingredients:

1 tsp shea or cocoa butter

1 Tbsp avocado or jojoba oil (or another you have on hand)

1 Tbsp local beeswax (grated or pastilles)

1 drop vitamin E oil (optional)

5 drops essential oil (optional) –

Melt first three ingredients in double boiler or metal bowl over a pot with 1/5-cup water. Melt on low heat. Stir. Remove from heat. Stir in optional ingredients. Cool. Store in an air-tight container.

Note: Avoid cold-pressed lemon, lime, grapefruit or bergamot essential oils which are phototoxic and can react with sunlight.
